Toyota GR Supra: Review

Even before his birth, the car was doomed to endless comparisons: you can not just take and make Supra, so as not to fall under the barrage of criticism and admiring reviews at the same time. Toyota is only in favor: the lack of attention to the new product does not threaten.

One of the main reasons for criticism from fans of the “real” Supra, which means the latest generation of the A80, was collaboration with BMW. Is it bad? And is this a cause for discontent? And what exactly is common to the Toyota Supra and the BMW Z4?

The new Supra has three competitors, and it’s not about classmates. The first and main competitor of the Supra is … Supra of the A80 generation, which has become the last one before the almost 15 year break. The second is the BMW Z4 with which the Supra, despite the different positioning, divides the platform and many components. The third one is the FT-1 concert, in the exterior of which a new generation was seen: the company supported the opinion, but in reality it turned out that the finished model is not similar not only in appearance but in size – Supra is noticeably smaller.

The length is 4,380 mm, the wheelbase is 2,470 mm. This almost corresponds to the Porsche 718 Cayman, but the overall width and wheel track of the Supra is almost 50 mm larger. Unlike the previous Supra, the novelty is designed only for two, the capacity of the trunk is not in any comparison with the A80. There is more space above the head, driving comfortably will be a driver more than 180 cm tall. Once driving, you realize that there is nothing in common with the old Supra: a high belt line with small side windows, a short and tall interior, a huge hood resembling a seashell and very short ass. At the same time, the ideal weight distribution is 50:50, the German side took care of this, although the Japanese recognize this without enthusiasm.

The striking difference from the old Supra in the behavior is easy to notice on a protracted arc: the new product easily and naturally gives an “overdose” of gas, so that the backside is slightly blown out in a fervent rush, but the car remains completely predictable even with the stabilization system disabled. Such behavior was achieved by a long and German and Japanese development teams. The priority for the Japanese, which was headed by Tetsuya Tada, was precisely the elimination of the negative elements of the oversteer effect while maintaining rear-wheel drive advantages.

Not without specificity, you can notice it at low speeds. On them, the Supra steering wheel is too light: variable steering ratios may not be the most optimal. It is worth the speed to grow up to 70 km / h and the picture is changing: a weighty “center” appears at the helm, and the steering wheels remain light. The maneuverability of the Supra with the increase in speed becomes “clearer,” but here it is impossible not to cite the example of the Toyota 86, which was loved by a large army of fans precisely for handling. It has a fixed gear ratio, and the steering wheel feels the same in almost the entire speed range, including and small.

Supra suspension is very unusual. The model is neither in terms of size nor in positioning of the Gran Turismo, however, the suspension (in the base and the only version so far) behaves just like that. Comfort is more than enough to ensure that on roads with poor asphalt, the driver does not cause negative sensations, but density and rigidity are present. However, this Supra is not a ring car, body roll is too large. Someone has already managed to speak critically about the chosen scheme (MacPherson strut in front, “multi-lever” in the back), but the point is not in the initial design, but in the settings. This is almost directly confirmed by the publication Autoblog Tetsuya Tada.

According to him, Supra is only the beginning: the car will be developed, supplemented and improved. Here he offered to watch the Porsche Cayman – from the base 718 Cayman to the Cayman GTS, Cayman T and Cayman GT4. It is possible, in the near future, we will see several new options that will completely change the idea of Supra, formed by its starting version.

The Japanese side supports the opinion that after a certain moment the teams were divided and did not communicate, although they shared with each other solutions to the problems encountered. Tada said that he ignored most of the decisions, but some made, for example, concerning noise insulation. Despite this, it is impossible to get rid of the essence of BMW, no fussy exterior design will not do that. Platform – specially created for the project, based on the enlarged platform of the BMW 2-series. The engine, according to the Japanese side, has no alternative: for 2012, when the project started, no one in the world had similar inline “sixes”, only BMW.

If outside, not knowing about the relationship of Supra and Z4, you can not notice the similarities, then the cabin will not work in any way. Each button, spinning and lever – all from the serial BMW. Is it bad? It is difficult to say, but it probably would have been either, or all the buttons in the cabin would be from Camry and Corolla, otherwise there is no other way – the project has a strict financial framework.

The 3.0-liter engine is great. He is here as a native: moderately thrust, excellent sound, responsiveness and combination with the transmission. The 8-step “automatic” has no alternative, some would like a “mechanic”, but so far there are no such plans at all. It is a bit strange that the same engine in the BMW Z4 is more powerful – it develops 382 hp. in under the hood of a Japanese car – only 335 hp In any case, the new Supra is considered to be the fastest serially produced Toyota in the entire history – 100 km / h cars are gaining in 4.1 seconds.

In modern money, taking into account inflation and other factors, the Supra A80 would cost almost $ 80,000, so the new GR-Supra is a bargain. In the American market, prices start at $ 50,920, the most expensive Supra 3.0 Premium costs 56,115 – almost as much as the base Z4 with a 4-cylinder engine or the simplest 300-horsepower Cayman.

Perhaps this is not the Supra that the A80 fans have been waiting for. From the Japanese in her suspension settings, exterior design and interior elements – the rest from BMW. The result was a fast, comfortable car with an unusual design, almost unparalleled. No matter how much Japanese or German cars are in this car, the result and the price are important, and so far the impressions are positive. This is not enough? Well, then it is worth waiting for new modifications, they will certainly be hotter.
