The British owners of some BMW models are already in the risk zone for 7 years, reports the BBC. Their special show «Watchdog», is engaged in consumer investigations, collected denials statistics, interviewing a lot of car owners and proving the existence of a manufacturing defect. The other day the German manufacturer announced the beginning of a mass recall, which will affect 312,000 cars. If this were done in a timely manner, at least one human life would be saved.
The problem is relevant for owners of four BMW models: 1 series, 3 series, X1 and Z4, produced from March 2007 to August 2011. The first reports of a malfunction, which resulted in the engine spontaneously turned off during the movement, appeared in 2011. The carmaker was notified, however, did not take measures and did not even notify DVSA (the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) – a government agency in the UK, including revocable campaigns, its parent organization is the UK Department of Transportation.
Meanwhile, in April 2013, according to DVSA, BMW announced the recall of the models of 1 series, 3 series, X1 and Z4 due to a possible engine stop during the movement of the car due to damage to the power cable “due to wear and overheating” caused by increased current and resistance. However, not all potentially dangerous cars were withdrawn at that time.
In 2014, DVSA notified BMW of the need for a massive recall, but the automaker again assured the State Department that, in the event of a defect, the owner will see a message on the dashboard and he will have time to safely fix the problem until the system completely fails. Alas, at the end of 2016, a fatal incident was recorded. One of the BMW cars lost its motor while driving, the car stopped, and the driver of the car following him, trying to escape from the collision, crashed into a tree and died. It is interesting that the stopped BMW did not have an alarm – like the other “electrician”, it went out of order …
After that, DVSA categorically insisted on the recall of all potentially faulty cars, but the German brand in April 2017 withdrew only 36 410 cars with gasoline engines. According to the results of the investigation in BMW, the refusal was not “critical”, since the steering and brakes remained working.
The message was the more surprising that in the United States back in 2013 because of a similar problem, the Bavarians still conducted a review, affecting about half a million (!) cars. In addition, reviews were organized in Australia, Canada and South Africa. And only now, after conducting an independent investigation of the BBC, BMW acknowledged that “the failure of electrical systems, similar to those that occurred earlier, could take place in cars that did not fall under previous reviews.” Well, it’s better late than never …
The BMW even promised to open a hotline for customers handling this issue and personally notify each owner of a potentially faulty car about the need to visit the dealer. By the way, to eliminate the malfunction (replace the defective power cable), according to the promises of representatives of the German brand, it will take no more than a couple of hours.
