VW and several other brands have abandoned the Paris Motor Show. Why?

Following Ford, Nissan and Infiniti about its refusal to participate in the nearest motor show in Paris, which will open its doors for journalists on October 2, and for the general public on October 4, Volkswagen also announced. It’s about the Volkswagen, while Audi, Seat, Skoda and Porsche, members of the VW concern, are still on the list of participants. As VW spokespeople told Automotive News, the refusal to participate is, firstly, unrelated to the fall in attendance of the exhibition, and secondly, does not mean that in 2020 the brand does not rent a stand.

Indeed, if in 2012 and 2014 the exhibition in Port Versailles was visited by 1,23 and 1,25 million people respectively, in 2016 – only 1,072,697. While fewer cars in France in recent years did not buy – together with Italy the country still divides the third place in Europe after Germany and Great Britain.

Meanwhile, the current year for Paris is an archival one, if only because the jubilee, for the first time an international car exhibition was held in the French capital in 1898, so this year the event will be 120 years old. In 1898, the stands were placed in the Tuileries Garden, and in order to be allowed to participate, all the cars-exhibits had to pre-drive their own way from Paris to Versailles and return back – it’s about 40 km.

This year, in addition to the traditional section of retro cars, which each time has an original thematic focus, there is a moto exhibition, a separate exposition of sports cars and a “mobility pavilion”. The organizers hope to return the interest of the public, and Volkswagen itself plans some “various communication events” in the French capital on the days of the event.

It should be noted that the drop in the popularity of the exhibition in Paris from visitors is the result of the drop in its popularity among producers: the fact is that in recent years the number of world and European novelties that can be seen on local stands has dramatically decreased. In addition, Paris has a strong competitor – the Frankfurt Motor Show, which takes place at odd years around the same time. This exhibition by the number of new products today is much ahead of Paris, not to mention the fact that the first car deal is not only in Europe but also in the world (again, based on the number of prime ministers), still there is Geneva, where the auto show is held annually at the beginning Martha.

It is interesting that a similar situation is in Detroit, where both manufacturers and visitors are quietly leaving, however, there are other reasons. On the one hand, due to the drop in production, Michigan recorded the highest unemployment rate amongst the states, on the other, many automotive premieres, say autonomous and electrical concepts, were moved to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which takes several days before.
