Volvo continues to actively work on the new generation of the S60 sedan, and to warm up interest in it, the company decided to show a photograph of the test prototype.
The picture with the new S60 was published on its Twitter by Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelson. Judging by the picture, the front of the new S60 almost completely repeats the V60 estate, which was introduced a few days ago, but the disks of the cars are still fundamentally different.
The new S60 is built on the basis of the modular SPA platform, which debuted for several years on the XC90 crossover. Later, on its basis, new generation of models S90, V90, V90 Cross Country, XC60 and V60 were created. A key feature of the SPA architecture is the possibility of installing only four-cylinder engines and the use of strong and high-strength steel in the chassis base, although the front bumper amplifier and the front “glasses” are made of aluminum alloy.
As for power plants, there are no surprises in this respect either: under the hood, the S60 is likely to have turbocharged petrol “quads” T5 and T6 Drive-E series, which will operate with the all-wheel drive. Also, the sedan will be equipped with diesel engines D3 and D4, which will transmit traction to the front wheels. As for the hybrid versions, they will most likely be two – like the V60 wagon. It’s about the engines of the T6 Twin Engine AWD and T8 Twin Engine AWD. Electric motors in these power plants are the same – 117-strong, while the total power varies – 340 and 390 forces, respectively. Gasoline and hybrid versions will be work with eight-speed automatic transmission. Diesel engines will receive a six-speed classic manual transmission.
Like the station wagon, the S60 sedan will undoubtedly receive a City Safety warning and prevention system that will stop the car immediately if the sensors recognize an obstacle in front of the car. Also, a semi-autonomous Pilot Assist system, as well as a Care by Volvo service, should be available on the car.
At the moment, the S60 prototype is being tested in the Lofoten Islands in Norway. Production of the sedan will begin this year at the brand plant in South Carolina.
Compete Swedish sedan will be with premium classmates – BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Jaguar XE. Last year in the European market, Volvo sold 7,384 copies of the S60, which is half that of the Jaguar XE sedans sold.
