In honor of the return to Pikes Peak, where Volkswagen will perform in the class of electrical prototypes, the brand engineers have restored the legendary twin-engine Golf – the first car built specifically for the “Race in the Clouds”. Arrivals at the Pikes Peak this year will begin on June 24.
The hatchback is equipped with two motors (they are installed in front and rear) with a volume of 1.8 liters each. The units are equipped with turbochargers KKK with a boost pressure of 1.6 bar and Hewland racing gearboxes. The maximum power of the power plant is 652 horsepower, but in order to improve reliability after restoration, it is reduced to 500.
The operation of the motors can be controlled directly from the cab: the traction is transmitted to all wheels or only to one axis, depending on which of the units is off.
Before the start of the restoration work, it was found out that high thermal loads during the race damaged some of the details: the rubber elements and the injection system specially designed for the car were useless. At one time, to combat engine overheating, project chief engineer Kurt Bergman developed a sophisticated cooling system with sprinkler sprinklers. When critical temperatures were reached, they sprayed water on small radiators.
For the Pikes Peak race of this year Volkswagеn built a prototype I.D. R Pikes Peak. It is also equipped with two motors, but now they are electric. The total output of the unit is 680 horsepower and 650 Nm of torque. The motors are powered by a block of lithium-ion batteries, which receives up to 20 percent of the required energy from the recovery system during braking.
