The German brand announced the massive electrification of its models. Electrification will be based on the “soft hybrid” technology, which is already used on some models.
According to the press service of the brand, the Golf of the eighth generation will actually receive a basic motor, which will be equipped with a starter-generator and a battery operating at 48 volts. This system will work actively at the moment when the car moves from downhill to coast, and it will feed the on-board electronics and climate control via a 12-volt converter. The engine at this point will be shut off, and the robotic gearbox will be reset to neutral. Also, the lithium-ion battery will be charged at partial loads.
In the arsenal of Volkswagen there is already such a motor: we are talking about the gasoline four-cylinder engine series EA 211 Evo volume of 1.5 liters. It includes a turbocharged engine with a capacity of 148 horsepower and a generator for an additional 8 horsepower, which can still act as a starter. According to Volkswagen, the hybrid component allows to save 0.3 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers of the way, and also reduces the level of emissions of harmful substances.
This may sound a bit strange, but the company already sells Golf with this engine. It’s about the modification of the Golf 1.5 TSI ACT BlueMotion, which has been on sale since February this year, and it’s unclear what else we can be surprised by the new generation Golf that will start production next year and what kind of innovations Volkswagen says.
However, it’s not the same Golf: according to Dr. Frank Welch who is a member of the board of management of Volkswagen, the company is starting a full-scale electrification company of the whole range: in addition to cars with traditional engines that will be equipped with a “soft hybrid,” Volkswagen will simultaneously offer fully electric models , which will be sold under the ruler ID Serial first-born of this series is just a hatchback.
The new Golf generation will be built on the existing MQB platform, but thanks to its planned upgrade, the weight of the car will be reduced by approximately 50 kilograms.
Last year, Volkswagen sold 482,177 copies of the Golf, whereas in 2016 it sold 491,961 cars, so we can say that with a small negative dynamics, sales are at a stable level.
