In autumn of 2017 in Tokyo, the Japanese manufacturer demonstrated the concept, and now the serial model is presented.
For Toyota Crown, the new generation has become the fifteenth, by the way, the novelty is no different from the autumn concept, but in comparison with its predecessor the situation is completely different. The “Crown” (crown in English means “crown”), for the first time there were additional windows in the rear pillars, but the dimensions of the car remained practically the same: length – 4 910 mm (+15 mm), width – 1 800 mm, height – 1 455 mm, and the size of the wheelbase has increased by 70 mm and is now 2,920 mm. Sedan of the new generation will also be sold in two versions – Athlete and Royal.
Toyota Crown is built on a new platform GA-L, which is one of the modifications of the global architecture of TNGA. The front suspension is a two-link model, and the rear suspension is multi-link, borrowed from the Lexus GS. Front and rear springs are installed.
Engineers in the new generation of the car managed to reduce the center of gravity by 15 mm and perform an almost perfect weight distribution on the axes – 50:50. Setting up the driving characteristics of the Crown was carried out at the Nurburgring, and the list of driving modes, in addition to the traditional Normal and Sport, was supplemented with a hardcore Sport +.
The base model is equipped with a turbo four 8AR-FTS volume of 2.0 liters, developing the power of 245 hp (+10 hp) in combination with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive. The remaining versions are equipped with a hybrid power plant.
The basic hybrid version of the Crown is equipped with an atmospheric four-cylinder engine Dynamic Force (A25A-FXS) with a volume of 2.5 liters with an output of 184 hp. complete with a 143-horsepower electric motor and electromechanical variator. The top Crown is equipped with a hybrid system of a new generation (multi stage hybrid system), similar to that installed on the Lexus model – LS 500h and LC 500h. The “kit” includes an atmospheric V6 in capacity of 3,5 liters capacity of 299 hp, working on the Atkinson cycle, a 180-hp electric motor, a four-stage automatic gearbox without a torque converter and three planetary gears. Such a system has ten fixed transmission transmissions and a combined power of 359 hp. Drive only rear.
The layout of the cabin is classic – an impressive central tunnel, a traditional instrument panel and a fixed lever AKP. In the basic complete sets upholstery of interior is fabric. There are two vertical displays on the front panel. The one that is higher is for the infotainment system, and the lower one is for controlling the various on-board systems of the car. A block of physical controls is also available, it is located below.
In the advanced trim levels the upholstery of the interior is made of leather, there are electrically adjustable seats, a rear-view camera and many other equipment. In addition, the central armrest is issued a control unit for seats, microclimate and multimedia. The sedan will receive the ITS Connect system, which provides “communication” of the car with other road users and road infrastructure. The list of systems will also be supplemented with the function of remote diagnostics, which will send information about cars to the service.
The start of sales in Japan is scheduled for the end of this month, the exact prices are not yet called. The Toyota Crown model is designed for the local market and no other deliveries are planned for the other markets.
