Toyota very much regrets that the development of a new sports car, which is positioned as a successor to the Supra, was delayed for such a long time. The chief engineer of the project Tetsu Tadu told Drive about this.
“We would very much like to revive the Toyota Supra much earlier. We apologize to the fans of this car for their expectations. They had to wait a new generation for more than 15 years, and I regret it, “the top manager said.
It was expected that the successor to the Supra will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show. However, at this motor show, the conceptual racing sport car GR Supra Racing was shown. The prototype is a harbinger of a new sports coupe. According to an unofficial version, the serial version of the car may debut in January next year at the Auto Show in Detroit.
In the model line of the Japanese brand, the car will take a step above the GT86 and will be the new flagship of the Japanese company. At the same time, the car will be sold under a new subbrand of Gazoo Racing.
The new Supra will share the platform with the third-generation BMW Z4 roadster – German and Japanese specialists are jointly developing a chassis for the new generation sports car since 2014. Thanks to the body of carbon fiber, the weight of the car will be less than 1,400 kilograms.
Flagship sports car Toyota will receive a hybrid power plant with an electric unit on the front axle and all-wheel drive. In addition, the sports car for the first time in the history of Toyota will receive a robotic gearbox with two clutches.
The engine line should include a two-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine with a capacity of about 245 hp, and a three-liter six-cylinder unit that produces about 330 horsepower. Both motors will be provided by BMW. In total, customers will be offered four modifications of the sports car – Supra, Supra GR, Supra GR Sport, Supra GRMN. All versions of the machine will differ greatly between technical characteristics and price.
