The next-generation Volkswagen Beetle hatchback can become an electric car with a four-door body. This is reported by Autocar with reference to its own source.
At the moment, the chief designer of the German concern Klaus Bischoff has already created the first sketches of the new electric Beetle. In this case, the final decision on the release of this vehicle will be made no earlier than the turn two or three years – after the launch of a series of several models of the new family of electric I.D.
If the project receives a green light, the basis of the next Beetle will fall MEB modular chassis designed specifically for electric vehicles Volkswagen new generation. The use of this architecture will preserve the classic shape of the body Beetle, to increase the space in the cabin, as well as the return to the use of the scheme with all-wheel drive.
The serial production of new generation Volkswagen electric cars will start in 2020. The first representative of the family I.D. will be a compact hatchback, followed by a crossover, minivan and probably a flagship sedan. By 2025 the Germans are planning to launch more than 20 cars with electric power units in the series.
