Indian company Tata Motors has stopped production of the compact car Nano, previously considered the cheapest car in the world. According to Bloomberg, last month only one machine came down from the assembly line, compared to 275 for the same period in 2017. Export did not take a single hatchback, while last year there were 25.
The reason for Nano’s failure on the market is the manufacturer’s desire for cheaper prices, as well as the propensity of cars for spontaneous combustion: after the beginning of sales, several such cases were identified, but the company wrote off this for “unauthorized connection of additional equipment to the regular wiring”.
The Indian market itself is growing: in June, passenger car sales grew by 38 percent, commercial vehicles by 42 percent, and two-wheeled vehicles by 22 percent.
Tata Nano was equipped with a 624-cc engine with a capacity of 38 horsepower and 51 Nm of torque. The box is a four-speed manual transmission. The upgraded version of the minicar – GenX – received a robotic gearbox with a sport mode of operation.
For the sake of reducing the price initially the car did not have a luggage door, there were no rubber seals, power steering, airbags, brake booster and air conditioning in the base. Later, Tata added models of the trunk door and even a premium version with an audio system, four speakers and Bluetooth.
