Next year, the Porsche and Audi brands, which are under the control of the Volkswagen Group, will present the Mission E and E-Tron Quattro electric models, which are built on completely different platforms. In the case of Porsche, this is the J1 platform, while the Audi crossover will be built on the more common MLB trolley. But everything will change by 2022.
According to Motortrend portal, the German concern is going to develop a new platform under the code abbreviation PPE – Premium Platform Electric, which will become the basis for electric models of Audi, Porsche and Bentley. The new platform will have three modifications, two of which will be developed by the specialists of Audi, another will take over the designers of Porsche. Current electrical platforms of these brands will be abolished.
According to the head of the development department of Audi Peter Mertens, Audi and Porsche experts will work in close cooperation, and no secrets engineers from each other will not keep each other.
It should also be noted that such a decision of the Volkswagen Group seriously affected the plans of Audi, which was going to stake on the modular platform MLB, which provides for the installation of a wide variety of engines. According to Peter Mertens, the brand will in fact have to make a sharp turn, as the plans for the relative platform have actually been canceled. But this was done not just because of the problems with universality, but because the platform was too expensive and heavy, and the cars created on its basis did not have the luxury characteristics.
As for the timing, the relocation of the Bentley Porsche and Audi models to the new PPE platform will take place four years later – in 2022.
As for the neighbors in the shop, Mercedes-Benz has developed the MEA – Modular Electric Architecture platform for its future electric vehicles, and the first model based on it will be the EQC crossover. BMW is betting on the CLAR platform, on the basis of which a variety of rear-wheel and all-wheel drive models are created, from the BMW 5 Series to the fresh X3 cross. Also, the company is preparing a new modular platform FAAR, which will form the basis of front-drive models of the brand.
