Tesla plans to deliver up to 400,000 electric vehicles in 2019February 15, 2019
Due to the large production volume of Model 3 and the global expansion, an increase of 55% year on year is not unlikely.
Tesla recently reported its results for the fourth quarter and for the whole of 2018, based on which it is possible to predict what the company might achieve in 2019.
Last year, Tesla demonstrated an extraordinary increase in production and sales, delivering almost as many electric vehicles during the year as in all previous years.
Tesla has provided their own forecast of what to expect from the supply of electric vehicles in 2019. In a letter to Tesla’s shareholders for the fourth quarter, management announced that it plans to supply from 360,000 to 400,000 electric vehicles during the year. This is 45-65% more compared to the same period last year, when approximately 245,500 electric vehicles were delivered.
But can investors trust Tesla’s management? In the end, the company missed key production and supply targets last year. Fortunately, Tesla is conservative with its leadership this time.
Despite the fact that to achieve the goal for the supply of vehicles Tesla will need 55% of sales growth, a significant increase in company performance is not required. The company delivered 90,966 electric vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2018. This corresponds to annual sales of about 364,000 electric vehicles. In other words, in order to increase annual deliveries by 48% compared to last year, all Tesla needs is to maintain the level of quarterly deliveries with which it came out in 2018.
But is there a demand? Of the 90,966 Tesla electric vehicles delivered in Q4, 63,359 came in Model 3 – all of them were delivered to North America. In 2019, Model 3 will appear in Europe and China, which significantly increases the demand for electric vehicles.
If we take into account the rapidly growing production of Tesla electric vehicles and the company’s recently announced desire to sell Model 3 at lower prices, the increase in supply by 55% year on year to 380,000 units begins to sound conservative.
To deliver 400,000 electric vehicles in 2019, the company will probably need to bring the promised standard Model 3 version to the market for $ 35,000, which will expand the customer base and increase the demand for the new product.
Tesla reports that the cheaper version of the electric car Model 3 (standard configuration) will be available in 4-6 months. However, investors should not expect the standard version to appear so soon. When asked about the promised Model 3 for 35,000 on Twitter, Musk replied: “We are doing everything possible to launch it. This is a super hard job. ”
