Perhaps 306 horses by today’s standards are not impressive on paper, but in reality this is more than enough to keep adrenaline in the blood at a level above average. The engine on the A 35 is built on the basis of a four-cylinder unit M 260, familiar to us from some modifications of the C-and E-Class. Thanks to the all-aluminum construction (including the cylinder head), it was possible to reduce its weight and, therefore, a little, but lower the center of gravity.

Twinscroll turbine is installed on the exhaust manifold, divided into two streams, due to which exhaust gases flow into each channel of the hot part independently of each other. Together, both of these solutions have reduced the effect of the turbo lumps. The thrust comes on the wheels gradually, rather than falling in an avalanche, and by 3000 rpm it reaches a peak of 400 Nm. As a result, you do not lose precious fractions of a second with intensive acceleration and can comfortably move in city mode.

Together with the motor, a 7-speed robotized transmission DCT works, the torque from which is transmitted to all four wheels. More precisely, not quite. By default, the A 35 is front-wheel drive, but as soon as the electronics understand that it is time to connect the rear axle, up to 50% of the traction is thrown back. Scenarios for this behavior mass: from extremely fast driving on serpentines and ending with the power slip in arcs.

The system works so quickly and delicately that it is simply impossible to notice. No matter how I tried to provoke a hot hatch to make a mistake when entering a corner, the car still goes exactly where the front wheels look. Extremely neutral behavior. And if you fill the A 35 into a turn even sharper and with a greater amplitude, then even with the stabilization system activated, the electronics allow for a slight slip of the rear axle.

Oh miracle! Finally in Affalterbach made the human algorithm of the function Race-Start. You no longer need to be a programmer and study instructions for hours to start with two pedals. Just translate the mode selector into Sport + and … everything! Both feet on the pedals, throw the brake, and A 35 shoots up to the first hundred in 4.7 seconds.

However, all of the above would be absolutely useless without a thoughtful chassis. Suspension on the A 35 really well prepared for fast driving. The front levers are now aluminum, which reduced the unsprung masses, and the steering knuckles are attached directly to the brake calipers – a solution that came from motor sports. The rear suspension is rigidly attached to the body through a subframe, and the elements themselves are also completely original.

Of course, it was not without optional adaptive shock absorbers, which operate in three modes: from comfortable to sporting. By default, the system constantly monitors the condition of the road surface and, depending on this, selects the optimal settings for the damping elements. And in order to increase the torsional rigidity of the body and thereby make handling even more accurate, several struts were installed on the bottom. Add to this the ideal weight distribution on the axles in the proportion of 50:50, and you will understand why the A 35 is so easily screwed into the turns.

Sooner or later, the winding mountain roads end and the country highways begin with road maintenance, heavy traffic and traffic jams. A 35 is not exhausted here. It offers the driver a whole scattering of electronic assistants who constantly exchange information with each other. For example, the character recognition system can even read temporary signs, and adaptive cruise control will reduce speed if it exceeds the one indicated on the sign. Is the road slightly deviated? Not scary. The system of holding the car in the lane will turn the steering wheel in the right direction, even if you have removed your hands from the steering wheel. However, after a while the machine will ask to return to independent drive.

Of course, the A 35 turned out to be more civil than the former A 45. However, no one expected any records from it. Compact, stylish and reasonably fast hatchback – for someone it may well be the perfect car for every day. What gives some chances to believe that the new A 45 will become even more hardcore and bold than before.
