New Zealanders figured out how to increase the range of the Nissan Leaf by 45%

The New Zealand dealer and rental company has developed a new battery module for the Nissan Leaf, which, according to Blue Cars, will increase its range by 45%.

The module was developed with the support of a local low emission vehicle development fund.

The latest Leaf model comes with a 40 kW / h battery. Its range, according to EPA, is 240 km, which is almost twice as long as the earlier versions of Leaf, but still significantly less than other modern electric vehicles. For comparison, in 2011, the first Nissan Leaf were equipped with a 24 kW / h battery and could drive only 117 km.

Since 2016, Nissan has increased the battery to 30 kW / h, and the range of travel – up to 172 km. It should be noted that in New Zealand, used Leaf with a small range of travel constitute a significant part of the fleet of electric vehicles in the country.

As described by Blue Cars, batteries of electric models consist of several modules. For example, a 30 kW / h Nissan Leaf battery consists of 24 modules, each of which combines 8 battery cells. Sometimes it is possible to prolong battery life by replacing defective items.

The authorities allocated a small amount of funding in the amount of 23,100 New Zealand dollars (21,800 US dollars) to the company. Using this amount, Blue Cars has developed, and then tested, new modules that are compatible with Nissan Leaf and can replace broken or non-working items. Along the way, it turned out that with their help, the stroke range can be significantly increased.

“Two months of testing have shown that Leaf batteries are successfully compatible with the newly developed module. It is able to increase the service life far beyond the limits allocated for the first batteries,” – says Blue Cars. So, if you install them on the 2016 Nissan Leaf, equipped with a 30 kW / h battery and capable of traveling up to 172 km, its travel range will increase to 250 km.
