The Swedish brand officially introduced the new generation S60 Midsize, opening a new plant in the US on which, in fact, this model will be produced.
The sedan is built on the basis of a modular SPA platform, which it shares with other medium-sized and large cars of the brand – XC90, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country, XC60 and V60. By creating this platform, Volvo has placed emphasis on unification, with the unification of not only power plants (a maximum of four cylinders), but also security systems.
In comparison with the predecessor, the new S60 has become longer and lower, but already: the length is 4,760 mm (+132 mm), the width is 1,849 mm (-16 mm), the height is 1,430 mm (-54 mm). The wheelbase of the new generation sedan has grown by 97 millimeters – this should positively affect the space at the feet of the rear passengers. As for the design, the new S60 is essentially a mix: in front it almost repeats the V60 wagon, in the back – the fullsize S90.
With the change of generation, Midsize lost diesel engines: D4 and D5. It’s about the turbo-coupe with the index D4204T14 and D4204T11 with a capacity of two liters and a payback of 181 and 224 horsepower, which are equipped with the crossover XC40, the V60 wagon and the S90 sedan. This approach is related to Volvo’s electrification strategy, and as part of this strategy, the new S60 will receive two hybrid engines with the ability to recharge from an ordinary outlet. It’s about the relatively new two-liter T6 and T8 engines, whose power is 340 and 400 horsepower, and if the first engine is equipped with a turbine, then the second one is a turbine and a compressor. Also the company immediately announced the S60 sedan version with the Polestar tuning, which will add 15 horsepower to the T8 engine. In addition to the engine, the modification will receive a sports kit, Brembo brakes, and Ohlins shock absorbers.
In addition to the hybrid, the sedan will also receive the traditional T5 and T6 engines from the same V60 wagon. It’s about two-liter “four” volume of two liters and a capacity of 250-310 horsepower. About the transmissions are not reported with an equal amount, but we can assume that the sedan will be equipped with both a proprietary six-speed “mechanics” and an eight-speed automatic transmission Aisin.
Midsize will be available through a subscription by Care by Volvo, which offers a monthly fee for using the car. True, only residents of Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States can use this service.
In the cabin Volvo S60 can be found multimedia system Sensus Connect, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The same system is equipped with the V60 wagon.
The improved semi-autonomous driving system Pilot Assist, according to Volvo, on the S60 sedan will take control of itself at speeds up to 130 kilometers per hour. It is reported on the improvement of its work algorithms, although the new generation XC60 presented last March can boast the same. The new generation S60 sedan will also be equipped with collision avoidance and prevention systems.
The novelty is already produced at the new Volvo plant in Charleston, South Carolina. By the way, he opened today, so you can congratulate the Swedish brand with a double debut. From this we can conclude that the US market will become the main one for the S60. Sales of this model in the US are weak: last year, Americans bought 12,144 copies of the S60, against 23,210 vehicles sold in 2013. In Europe, the S60’s business is even worse: only 7,384 copies were sold in the past year.
The price of the new S60 has not yet been officially announced, but according to the news agency Cnet, the new S60 will be sold in the United States at a price of 36,795 dollars.
Competitive novelty will be with Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Jaguar XE and other mid-size sedans.
