New Toyota RAV4 for Europe: without diesel, but the hybrid has become more economical

At the Paris Motor Show brought the new generation Toyota RAV4 hybrid crossover. In Europe, the start of sales is scheduled for next year.

For the first time, the new RAV4 was shown back in March 2018 in New York, but then it debuted a cross in the specification for the American market. Today is the European version. There are no differences in terms of design, only the plates for the license plates correspond to the European standards.

The SUV is built on a modular platform TNGA-K. After moving to a new platform, the dimensions of the model remained almost unchanged, except that the wheelbase grew by 30 mm and reached 2,690 mm. Also, the RAV4 13 mm increased ground clearance (now 190 mm). The torsional rigidity of the body increased by 57%. Cross received a new power steering mechanism on the rail (the predecessor had a motor on the shaft). The suspension configuration is the same: MacPherson struts in the front, multi-link in the back.

Europeans Toyota RAV4 will be available with a hybrid installation, which included the atmospheric “four” 2.5 new family Dynamic Force with a combined injection, electric motor, electromechanical variator (in the American version – 8-speed automatic transmission) and nickel-metal hydride battery. Hybrid will be offered with front or all-wheel drive. In the first case, the aggregate return of the installation is 218 hp, in the second – 222 hp.

All-wheel drive RAV4 Hybrid maximum traction on the rear wheels increased from 953 to 1300 Nm. Also, this version has a Trail Mode with imitation of the work of locking the front differential. Such a “SUV” pick up the first 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds, the claimed fuel consumption – 4.6 l / 100 km in the combined cycle. The front-wheel-drive hybrid accelerates to 100 km / h in 8.4 seconds, the flow rate is 4.5 l / 100 km.

The previous generation hybrid RAV4 produces 197 hp, the acceleration time to 100 km/h – 8.3 seconds, fuel consumption of version 2WD – 4.9 l / 100 km, option 4WD – 5.0 l / 100 km.

Also in Europe, a new generation crossover will be sold with a two-liter “aspirated”, but its power has not yet been disclosed. This motor can be combined with the manual transmission or variator. For the two-pedal version, a new all-wheel drive transmission Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with a multi-plate clutch and a separate control system for each of the rear wheels is provided.

But diesel in Europe was dismissed. Note, the previous generation Toyota RAV4 in the Old World can still be bought with a 2.0 D-4D diesel engine (143 hp), paired with a six-speed manual transmission.

The new crossover will enter the European market at the beginning of 2019.
