Mercedes-AMG will build a new sports car with a two-liter turbo engine

The German manufacturer plans to develop a new sports car that would compete with Porsche Cayman.

In the portfolio Mercedes-AMG currently represented more than 55 models that have a truly sporting character, but sports cars in this “herd” only two. The top-level Project One, which is essentially a Formula 1 racing car, adapted for driving on civilian roads, for 2,275,000 euros, and a Mercedes-AMG GT with a price tag about 20 times smaller, positioned as a rival to the Porsche 911.

Now it became known, reported British resource Autocar, that the division Mercedes-AMG intends to build another sports car. It will take place below AMG GT and will compete in the market with Porsche Cayman and Boxster.
It is assumed that the new sports car will receive a “soft” hybrid power plant with a two-liter turbo-four, a starter generator and a 48-volt electrical system. Such a system, depending on the version, will produce 300-400 hp. Most likely, the power plant will be combined only with a robot with a double clutch and a rear drive. Probably, the engine will be borrowed from the hot-hatching AMG A35 and A45.

The Mercedes-AMG has not yet decided on the layout of the car. There is an idea of popularizing a sports car with races, for which it is planned to create a car according to GT4 specifications, which will be much cheaper than the current AMG GT4 for 198,850 euros, that is, the mid-engine layout is preferable. Although, the traditional scheme with the front position of the motor is not excluded, but within the wheelbase. The second option is cheaper to develop, but worse suited for racing.

The price of the Porsche Cayman and Boxster is 52,000 and 54,000 euros, respectively. Last year, in Europe, 8,438 such sports cars were sold, and in the five months of 2018, sales amounted to 4,383 units. For comparison, the owners of Mercedes-AMG GT were 2,443 Europeans, and Porsche 911 sold 15,053 copies. True, AMG GT in the German market is worth at least 118,000 euros, which is 20,000 euros more expensive than the most affordable 911.

Recall, the latest novelty of Mercedes-AMG was the four-door Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé, which should compete with Porsche Panamera.
