The head of Alpina Burkard Bovenzipen did not dare to add a crossover to the lineup for a long time, but the Alpina XD3 (BMW X3) model became successful. Now the family of brand crosses is supplemented by Alpina XD4 based on BMW X4.
Although the new generation BMW X4 was introduced only a month ago, XD4 should not be considered a “raw” product. Unlike most of the firms specializing in tuning, Alpina works as a manufacturer, engages in engineering, which includes a serious test base with engine stands and cooperates with BMW in third-party projects. Due to what, access to X4 in the process of developing XD4 from Alpina was in advance.
Note, Alpina XD4 and XD3 are similar in technical terms. In the engine compartment of a novelty there is a turbodiesel in capacity of 3.0 liters, borrowed from BMW X4 M40d. This is an aluminum inline turbocharger N57 (N57D30TOP), in which engineers Alpina replaced pistons, intercooler, intake, exhaust and cooling systems, and added two more turbochargers, increasing their number to four. The return of the upgraded diesel has increased from 326 hp and 680 Nm to 388 hp and 770 Nm. It would seem, why bother with hardware upgrades, if you can achieve better chip-tuning performance, but Alpina has “trump cards” – reliability and good traction already “at the bottoms”.
If the stock BMW X4 M40d is able to accelerate from zero to the first 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, then the Alpina model performs this exercise in 4.6 seconds. In addition, due to the absence of an electronic limiter, the maximum speed of XD4 increased from 250 km / h to 268 km / h.
The standard equipment of the Alpina XD4 includes a reinforced eight-band automatic gearbox ZF, a four-wheel drive system, a rear differential controlled by electronics, adaptive shock absorbers, an advanced exhaust system and Alpine 20-inch wheels with a multi-spoke design. Inside, the design of the digital “dashboard” has changed, and an interior with Lavalina leather trim is still available.
The new BMW Alpina XD4 is available for order now, but “live” deliveries in Europe will begin this summer. The starting price tag is about 80 thousand euros.
