The conceptual urban electric car Honda Urban EV made its debut in the autumn of 2017 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and became almost the brightest novelty of the exhibition – the hatchback’s retrodesign reminded the Europeans Peugeot 205 and the first VW Golf GTI, although in fact Honda stylists drew inspiration from old Honda Civic and Honda City. In any case, the machine turned out very well, and it is gratifying that the Japanese company immediately announced its intention to launch it into mass production and sell it not only in the domestic market, but also everywhere where there is a need for environmentally friendly transport.
It was planned that the serial version of the electric car will go on sale in 2019, and in 2018 on the European roads, pre-production prototypes of Urban EV were encountered more than once. The next dose of images of camouflaged test images was published today by the German auto motor und sport magazine, and it can be concluded from them that the production car will retain most of the concept’s features, namely the pop-eyed lighting engineering and rear-view cameras instead of mirrors, and the salon mirror has also been replaced by a monitor. Also, apparently, the wide-format digital dashboard will remain in the cabin, which flaunted the concept, but the serial car would not have “suicidal” front doors with frameless stacks – instead of them the prototypes are equipped with quite traditional swing gates, and there were five doors instead of three – for the convenience of landing / disembarking rear passengers, while the second row is ready to accommodate three riders, that is, the car will be five-seater.
About the technical stuffing of the first mass Honda electric car, nothing is known yet, except that it was created on a completely original platform, which will form the basis of a whole brood of “green” models. Among them may be a stylish Sports EV coupe, a prototype of which Honda showed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2017.
As for the serial hatchback, his world premiere, as reported by German colleagues, will be held this fall in the same place where they showed the concept, that is, at the Frankfurt Motor Show. However, the sale of Urban EV will appear only in the beginning of 2020, and even then the manufacturer is ready to allocate only 5,000 copies a year to Europe, that is, Urban EV risks becoming a deficit. What is the reason for this restriction is still unclear, but we venture to suggest that Honda, like many other automakers that are developing electric cars, has encountered a number of technological difficulties that do not allow immediately releasing green in large quantities – Tesla, Audi and Daimler.
