By the end of 2018, Waymo will launch an unmanned taxi in the US Phoenix, trips at which will be cheaper than the services of Uber and Lyft
Waymo (the Google project) has agreed with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) on the delivery of 62,000 minivans Chrysler Pacifica, on the basis of which a taxi with automatic control will be created. At the moment, about 600 vehicles are registered in the Waymo autonomous vehicle fleet. This is reported by The Verge.
Earlier, Waymo announced the creation of “the world’s first autonomous transport service,” which should be launched before the end of this year. At the moment, Waymo is the only company whose cars are allowed to drive on public roads without an operator driving in Arizona.
The new service will be launched in the city of Phoenix and its suburbs, where Waymo for the past few years has been actively testing equipment with an autopilot. Customers can order an unmanned taxi with a special mobile application. The developers of the system note that trips will cost less than Lyft or Uber.
UAVs are based on hybrid minivans Chrysler Pacifica. Machines are equipped with cameras and powerful sensors for a circular view, as well as lasers that can recognize objects at a distance of 300 meters. Eventually, Waymo plans to launch its own unmanned transport service, which will operate on the basis of a mobile application.
