American truck manufacturer Freightliner, part of the Daimler concern, introduced two electric trucks – a large tractor and medium-tonnage truck. In addition, Daimler Trucks announced the creation of the E-Mobility Group, responsible for electric trucks all over the world.
The Freightliner eCascadia is built on the basis of the Cascadia serial truck of the so-called “eighth class” – the American classification is the so-called heavy long-distance tracks. But instead of a diesel engine, an electric motor with a power of 730 horsepower is installed under the hood.
The battery capacity is 550 kilowatt-hours – this is 5.5 times more than the passenger car Tesla Model S P100D. You can estimate that such a battery weighs about four tons. On one charge, the truck is able to cover about 400 kilometers. On electromobile measures this is an extremely worthy indicator, but for a long-haul truck this is still not enough. And to raise the charge to 80 percent, even with the most powerful charger will take at least an hour and a half.
The second car is the “single” Freightliner eM2 106 for local transportation. The capacity of its batteries is more modest (325 kilowatt-hours), as well as the power of the electric motor (480 horsepower). The power reserve is 370 kilometers, and to restore the charge to 80 percent of the maximum, it will take about an hour.
Already this year 30 electric trucks of both models will go on trial operation in North America. And serial production is planned to be developed by 2021.
In addition, Daimler Trucks announced the creation of the E-Mobility Group. It will develop and implement electric trucks all over the world. So far, these tasks have been on local units: Mercedes Trucks in Stuttgart (Germany), Freightliner in Portland (USA), Fuso in Kawasaki (Japan). Now the relevant departments will be transferred to the general management. The new unit will be headed by engineer Geza Raymelt, who still headed the power units department in the “passenger compartment” of Mercedes-Benz.
