Ford Mondeo-related sedan: plus a luxury version, minus the base engineMarch 15, 2019
The Chinese sedan Ford Taurus almost five meters long debuted in 2015, like the Mondeo, this car is built on the CD4 platform. Production is established at the local plant of the joint venture of Ford and Changan. At the end of last year, the demand for Taurus in the Celestial Empire fell by 68% – 8,293 customers stopped the choice on the model. Nevertheless, the Ford company is not going to give up the sedan – a freshened version will soon enter the market, its photos appeared in the database of the Ministry of Industry of China.
The model received a new grille and bumpers, other headlights and taillights, and the trunk lid became different. Also for Taurus is now provided for top-end equipment Vignale, as for other Ford models in Europe. The external differences of this option are a grid with a mesh pattern instead of horizontal stripes, disks of the original design. It is not yet known how the car interior has changed, but Ford Vignale will most likely have more expensive finishing materials. Note that the luxury version with a different decor is also found in the pre-reform Ford Taurus, but it is called LTD.
In the documents submitted to the Chinese certification authority, only one motor is declared – this is the former petrol “turbo-four” 2.0 EcoBoost with a capacity of 245 hp. The pre-reform Ford Taurus still has a four-cylinder, 1.5 EcoBoost turbo engine with a return of 181 hp. It is not excluded that the base engine was sent into retirement. In the previous sedan, both engines are combined with a six-speed “automatic”, probably, this box has moved to the refreshed model.
In China, sales of the updated Ford Taurus should start this year. The predecessor there costs from 234,800 yuan. By the way, the sister Mondeo is also available in the PRC, but it is positioned one step lower (from 179,800 yuan), thanks to which it diverges more vigorously, although its sales have significantly subsided – 45,405 cars sold in 2018 (- 60%).
Recall, the Ford Taurus sedan is still available in the US, but this is a completely different model – it is based on the D3 platform (a type of Volvo P2 platform). In the States, sedan last year found 28,706 hosts (-14%), while Ford Fusion (as the Mondeo is called in the USA) sold over 173,600 copies (-17%). At home, the Taurus brand is not going to be updated, as this sedan will soon be removed there from sales (along with the Fusion).
