Designer from Germany has developed an alternative E-Class – in the style of the iconic W115May 3, 2019
David Obendorfer, an independent industrial designer from Germany, developed a variant of the alternative Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
A special feature of the design project called Icon E is the retrostyle, which refers to the 1968 Mercedes-Benz W115 sedan. This model was produced until 1976, and thanks to a combination of incredible reliability, sophisticated design and comfort, acquired a cult status, becoming the first truly massive business class sedan from Mercedes-Benz.
Distinctive features of the W115 – vertical headlights, a classic three-volume profile, a wide grille – Obendorfer interpreted in a modern manner. The design project Icon E is a stylist’s own initiative, Daimler AG has nothing to do with it. However, Obendorfer initially worked on his brainchild with the idea of its possible embodiment in a real model.
Therefore, the technical basis implies the serial E-Class of the current generation W213. The project assumes a complete replacement of all exterior panels, but the power structure of the body should remain the same as that of the W213. Obendorfer dedicated his work to two great Mercedes-Benz chief designers, Paul Bracu, who created the original W115, and Bruno Sacco, under whose leadership they made the design of all Mercedes from 1975 to 1999.
So far, the Obendorffer project exists only in the form of computer mathematical models, but if there is an investor, it may be embodied in a real model.
