The Bavarian brand decided in the 21st century to revive the legendary name of the 8 Series with a new coupe-type car, which, according to the brand management idea, should literally be driven in by a wedge between the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The design of the flagship coupe is based on the eponymous concept presented in Italy in late May 2017. The length of the body is 4,843 mm, width 1,902 mm, in height the car reaches 1,341 mm, the wheelbase is 2,822 mm. Compared with the concept, the serial 8 Series Coupe has a slightly different exterior: the grille has a more relaxed outline, the front bumper air intakes are completely different in shape, the optics have added in size, the shape of the hood and mirrors has changed slightly. Changes have touched and other elements of the body: to list all the subtleties of the meaning there, but in short – the Bavarians left the original concept, but significantly changed the details.
The novelty will be offered both with petrol, and with the diesel engine. For lovers of gasoline engines, a 8-Series with a capacity of 4.4 liters with two new twin-turbine turbines (located in the collapse of the engine), which develops a capacity of 530 horsepower, is prepared. Thanks to it, the coupe can conquer the speed of 100 kilometers per hour in 3.7 seconds, the maximum speed is limited by electronics at around 250 kilometers per hour. The fuel consumption in the mixed cycle is 10.0-10.5 liters per 100 km. For fans of diesel engines, the unit will be offered in volume of three liters, the capacity of which is 320 horsepower. With it, the coupe can accelerate to 100 kilometers per hour in 4.9 seconds, the maximum speed will still be limited to 250 kilometers per hour. The fuel consumption of a diesel engine is much more modest – 5.9-6.2 liters per 100 kilometers of track. Both engines will work with the eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic (probably ZF) and four-wheel drive.
On the car as standard, LED-optics, but for a surcharge, you can order and headlights BMW Laserlight, which can illuminate the distance at a distance of 600 meters.
The interior of the coupe is already standard on the skin, there are also wireless “charging”, Hi-End acoustics Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System, a dashboard BMW Live Cockpit with a diagonal of 10.25 inches, a multimedia system of 12.3 inches.
In addition, the driver and passengers can count on a set of modern stabilization systems, collision avoidance, advanced parking sensors and cruise control.
According to the British edition of Autocar, BMW’s chief manager Sarah Lessmann positions the BMW 8 Series as a symbiosis between the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-Benz S-Class: the dynamic characteristics of the coupe are closer to Porsche, and the level of comfort to Mercedes.
The first cars will appear at dealers in November of the current year, but, according to the British edition of Carmagazine, local car dealers will start accepting orders this month. According to the information of colleagues, in the basic version the coupe will be sold at a price of 76,270 pounds sterling, the modification with the V8 engine will be estimated at 100,045 pounds sterling.
