Audi R8 which is not allowed to drive on the roads

The Audi Sport racing division presented a new version of the Audi R8 LMS GT3 sports car at the Paris Motor Show. The update package will increase the reliability of the machine and make it easier for amateur racers to manage a 585-strong coupe.

According to the director of client programs at Audi Sport, Christopher Reinke, the amount of improvements was intentionally made small so as not to increase the expenses of the teams and make it possible to easily install new parts on previously purchased cars.

Chief Designer Armin Plitsh identified four main areas of refinement: aerodynamics, brake cooling, clutch and gearbox.

The updated car can be found from a distance through three horizontal slots above the grille. The front of the car is re-registered in a new corporate spirit, and a similar grid should soon receive a serial Audi R8. But the main thing is still different: now the wings of the canard are completely different at the corners of the front bumper.

The maximum downforce is limited to the GT3 class rules, but the new tail should work better in a wider range of ride height values. This will simplify the management of amateur racers, and the professionals will do better.

In the finishing tests, not only professional racers participated. They were specially invited by amateurs – they are the main target audience of this car.

Improved cooling air supply to the front and rear brakes. A more efficient removal of heated air from the rear brakes reduced the heating of the rear tires.

Transmission improvements are aimed at improving reliability. Resource three-clutch managed to increase one and a half times, and new gears and reinforced bearings extended the life of the sequential gearbox. In addition, the engineers managed to reduce the wear of the limited slip differential – and now, during the long race, it will retain its characteristics longer.

In general, the car has previously been distinguished by high reliability. For example, the serial engine V10 5.2 requires service only every 10,000 “combat” kilometers, a planned bulkhead — after 20,000 kilometers.

The updated Audi R8 LMS can be ordered by anyone. The cost of the car is 398,000 euros excluding taxes. And teams that already have a second-generation R8 LMS can purchase a package for an independent upgrade of their cars for 28,000 euros

Category GT3 – one of the most popular in the race “Gran Turismo”. Racing cars of this class offers more than a dozen car makers: Audi, Aston Martin, Bentley, BMW, Ferrari, Honda, Lamborghini, Lexus, Mclaren, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Porsche.

The racing version of the second-generation Audi R8 sports car was introduced in 2015. The car turned out to be successful: since then, the Audi Sport division has built and sold 103 copies of GT3 class cars, and the number of victories in the championships is already in the tens.

Like most cars in the GT3 category, the Audi R8 LMS inherits a lot of components from the road car – their total share reaches 50%. Moreover, the Audi racing body is assembled and primed in the same Böhlinger Höfe factory in Heilbron as regular Audi R8s. And only the final assembly of the chassis is in the racing unit next door.
