2018 Porsche 911 GT2 RS Review

Porsche last summer introduced a real race car for public roads – coupe 911 GT2 RS. The novelty visited the first tests of our foreign colleagues, who at a glance tried to understand its advantages and disadvantages. We bring to your attention a brief “squeeze” of opinions collected by us from the theses of journalists.

The reviewers of the Caranddriver first of all wondered why in the cabin Porsche 911 GT2 RS with the Weissach package cup holders, if instead of the rear row of seats there is a spacer, and some elements of the car suspension are made of carbon, exactly, like the steering lobes.

But the main thing – this is how the Porsche 911 GT2 RS rides, and it rides “brutally, but without bad manners”, – write colleagues, than their predecessors could not boast. The car is very docile, both on the racetrack and on public roads.

In the car there is a spartan atmosphere: there is no air conditioning system or multimedia system, which is why even in the fall in the cabin it can be so hot that even open windows can not be saved. Racing “buckets” are not suitable for all owners of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

The racing suspension transfers almost everything that falls under the tires of the car to the body, but at high speed the situation changes and the shaking becomes moderate.

The motor even on idle sounds clearly loud, but the turbine needs at least 2,500 revolutions to make its work feel. The maximum power is developed by the engine at 7,000 rpm, while the cutoff is triggered at 7,200.

The first gear from the seven-speed “robot” PDK according to Porsche standards are very short: the second gear ends at 100 kilometers per hour, and the car can easily break into slipping due to excess capacity. But unlike the predecessor, when overclocked, there is a feeling that you are driving an all-wheel drive car, and there are no problems with its control at the limit of possibilities.

The wheel of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS is light, if you compare it with the German competitors. But the sensations from the steering are brilliant, and the feedback from the driver is simply amazing. At low speeds, the chassis has a neutral balance, but if you turn off traction control, throw the car into a skid and get it to turn into a turn, it’s easy.

Topgear reviewers after starting the engine noted that they had never driven a car with a so loud turbocharged engine. The dampers of the active exhaust system are located at the end of the exhaust ports, which does not significantly change the nature of the sound.

The fact that Porsche abandoned the classic “mechanics” on this model – plus, observers are sure, who perfectly remembered their torment with the 612-horsepower Porsche 997 GT2 RS, when they tried to catch the thin line between a successful start and not to “burn” grip and not “fall through” in terms of turnover.

On the legendary British track Silverstone, according to the memoirs of the Topgear reviewers, the Nissan GT-R was much slower than the 911 GT2 RS, and the acceleration of the “German” is impressive not only to the first 130 kilometers per hour, but also after 240 kilometers per hour. On a broad highway you can afford almost everything, but when after it you leave on the public road, even an easy pressing on the gas pedal leads to exceeding the permissible speed rules.

Manages the coupe very accurately, and it’s surprising, because it’s not so easy to transfer 690 horsepower only to the rear wheels. The car behaves absolutely predictable, which you absolutely do not expect from it. But after three or four laps on the track, the tires Michelin’s trackiest Cup 2 start to overheat, and this immediately leads to the fact that the car starts to go past the turns, and the steering loses clarity.

In general, the reviewers agreed that Porsche had a real race car for public roads.
