In February this year, Peugeot introduced the second generation of the model 508, which, unlike the first generation, has now become an elevator and has lost the door frames. Finally, the first copies of the novelty reached the test drive.
Salon of liftback significantly changed compared to its predecessor. The compact steering wheel does not close the electronic dashboard, landing is convenient. Salon our colleagues liked even more than the cars of Volkswagen Group, Ford or Opel. But the touch screen is not very convenient to use: under it there is nothing to substitute palm. All this leads to the fact that the hand when working with the multimedia is tired.
On the run, the Peugeot 508 is good. Suspension confidently fulfills the unevenness of the road surface, while in Comfort mode the sedan is well managed. From lock to lock, three turns of the rudder, the control is consistent, weight is present. The car involves more than the Passat or Insignia, but less than the Mondeo or rear-wheel drive German sedans. The two-liter turbodiesel for 174 horses is well muffled.
But in the mode of Sport immediately and it is not clear what has changed. The car becomes literally a little more solid, the steering is more heavily weighted, and the turbodiesel reacts more actively to the gas pedal. Perhaps someone will want more sportiness, but probably 508 does not need it.
The option with a gasoline engine for 179 forces is more than 100 kilograms lighter than a diesel engine (the petrol version weighs 1,575 kilograms), which positively affects handling. Trying to use paddle petals you will find that below 2 500 rpm the petrol engine is not so interesting. Fuel consumption in urban mode will be in the region of 12 liters per 100 km.
Steering with an electric booster at the liftback, though not as sensitive as a sedan of the previous generation, had a keg with hydraulics under the hood, but a similar pattern is observed among competitors. But the elevator is managed with dignity: it dives decisively, it clings firmly to the asphalt, there is no pronounced understeer. The rolls are present, but they are minimal.
In city conditions, when pits meet on the way of the car, deaf sounds can penetrate into the interior, and the steering wheel can tremble a little.
But on the road, excellent aerodynamics and noise insulation do their job: the machine generates a few parasitic sounds. The base turbodiesel four with a volume of 1.5 liters with a payback of 130 horsepower does its job excellently. It’s almost not audible, the dynamics are normal, and the manual transmission and clutch perfectly complement the picture.
The turbocharged petrol four in capacity of 1,6 liters on 221 force does liftback a playful. This engine seems more civilized than diesel engines, but the situation is spoiled only by small vibrations that are felt under the right foot.
In the back row, there is enough space above the heads of passengers, despite the shape of the roof. Space for the legs is also enough.
A series of seven aluminum keys that can be controlled by the “stove” and heated seats perfectly complements the interior of the car and creates a powerful sense of quality. The multimedia system is installed under the deflectors, competitors usually have the opposite.
In general, Peugeot has a very strong car, which, can make a serious competition to the leaders of the segment.
