In late October last year, Citroen introduced the updated hatchback C4 Cactus. Compared with the pre-styling version, the model has not only got a new look: now the hatchback is equipped with a suspension with hydraulic stops and new PureTech motors.
The main feature of the C4 Cactus is certainly a suspension, and to achieve complete isolation of the cabin from driving on the potholes of Citroen failed, and the back of the car suffers more from this.
Nevertheless, on the move the C4 Cactus is softer and smoother than cars of a similar class. It is more comfortable and pre-styling version, and we can even say that Citroen with this car returned to the habits of the old school hatchback CX. About the comparison with the Volkswagen Golf and even the Peugeot 308 there is no question – these cars behave completely differently. And pay for the soft habits will have in the sharp turns, because the rolls are large by the standards of the class.
The steering wheel of the Citroen C4 Cactus is very light, but completely insensitive. To make the hatchback actively pass the turns, you have to work hard with your hands.
We tested a car with a three-cylinder PureTech turbo engine with a capacity of 1.2 liters and a classic six-speed manual transmission. The motor claims nothing: it works quietly and smoothly, and its 130 hp are enough for a dynamic ride. We also swept the 110-horsepower version of this engine. You can stop on this version, given that it is cheaper. As for the gearbox, the first three gears are unusually short.
Multimedia system C4 Cactus works fine: no complaints. Seats at the hatchback contribute to long trips, but they are not installed well, as a result of which the backrests can interfere with the feet of passengers in the back row.
The new C4 Cactus on the road feels like a classic Citroen CX. If you go in a straight line, that he effectively absorbs the roughness of the road surface, but here in the turns he lacks an accurate steering control. But if you enter into turns without sharp movements of the steering wheel, the hatchback provides an excellent level of grip.
As for the salon, he is an amateur: there is no tachometer on the digital instrument panel, and the options should be controlled using the touchscreen of the multimedia system – there are not a few buttons on the front panel.
There is plenty of space in front and back, and 1,5-liter bottles of water can be put in door cards.
In general, Citroen built a car, which, sorry for the tautology, is Citroen. It does not look like classmates, it is authentic, and provides a high level of comfort. Dynamics, he also is not deprived, but he does not have a sporting character either.
