Review Hyundai Santa Fe 2019

It seems that the controversial face of the new Santa Fe was lent by that same Jeep Cherokee, who made a lot of noise five years ago. With the next generation change, Hyundai Santa Fe has changed beyond recognition, and in terms of design, it turned out to be a sort of antipode to the conservative Kia Sorento Prime co-platform. Loving or hating a revolutionary appearance is up to you, and it is much more interesting for us, did the new Santa Fe turn out to be as good and balanced as the Sorento Prime?

It seems that the controversial face of the new Santa Fe was lent by that same Jeep Cherokee, who made a lot of noise five years ago. With the next generation change, Santa Fe has changed beyond recognition, and in terms of design, it turned out to be a sort of antipode to the conservative Kia Sorento Prime co-platform. Loving or hating a revolutionary appearance is up to you, and it is much more interesting for us, did the new Santa Fe turn out to be as good and balanced as the Sorento Prime?

The main news of the generational change is that now Santa Fe is two models in one. The five-seater car is blown away for the short-base version, and the seven-seater replaces the long-base Grand Santa Fe. The dimensions are just about the middle: plus 7 cm to the length of the old Santa Fe and almost the same to the wheelbase. As a result, the “fourth generation” Santa Fe has become noticeably larger than the Kodiak and is almost the same size as the Sorento Prime.

Above – cilia diode running lights and dimensions, below – fog, and on the middle floor – LED-lights, which turn in the top configuration after the wheel. There are no questions to the efficiency of lighting, but on the highway, low-lying optics will sandblast and dirty more quickly, especially since it does not have washers.

On many test Santa Fe body parts in some places bristling, and in the gaps between the doors almost does not get through the finger.

The cars on the presentation – with a single automatic window regulator, although these should be all four. They say there was a mistake in production, and from the next installment it will be fixed. But in order to obtain a heated rest zone for windshield wipers, like in Sorento Prime, you will probably have to wait for the restyling.

With the rest of the electronic helpers everything is great, you can put them on the available versions of Santa Fe. Adaptive cruise in the case of a traffic jam now warns that the car has moved ahead, the traffic assistant in the lane turns on its own in gentle arcs and does not even need to hold the steering wheel, and, of course, there is the usual system of emergency braking.

And on the basis of the radar control “blind” zones turned out a whole complex of security systems. In addition to the usual warning about the presence of interference from the side, there was a function to prevent collisions when changing lanes – in which case a short braking impulse on the wheels of the corresponding side will take you back to the strip. In addition, Santa Fe will stop on its own if there is a dangerous rendezvous with cars traveling in the transverse direction when leaving the parking lot. Finally, a unique feature of the new Hyundai Santa Fe is connected with radars in the rear bumper – a safe exit system with a “smart” child lock.

Imagine a typical roadside stop: you want to get out, but a car is approaching from behind. To warn you about this, Santa Fe will beep when you try to open the front door and will not let you unlock the child’s lock.

Instead of a coarse Asian interior – a more strict and wide cockpit with a three-layer front panel and a neatly looking multimedia system tablet. Only the semi-virtual dashboard doesn’t fit into the general mood, which is put in place of the traditional one in expensive trim levels and it looks painfully Chinese. But much is sheathed in pleasant leather, and the upper part of the cabin, including the ceiling, is in a cool textured fabric.

Racks have become much thinner, large mirrors – now on the legs, landing, even in the lower position of the chair is very high. Shelves for small things heap, connectors and sockets are located conveniently, with equipment order.

On the second row of the place is full, the sofa is adjustable both lengthwise and along the angle of inclination of the back. It turns out a good family interior, the dual-zone “climate” would work more nobly, and the top-end Krell audio system with ten speakers sounded more thoughtful.

The platform from the car of the previous generation seriously finalized. First, as Hyundai experts say, the share of high-strength steels in the body of the new Santa Fe is the largest among all brand models, 57%. The American Security Institute IIHS has already taken factory crash tests into account, and Santa has received the highest safety rating of Top Safety Pick +. Secondly, the engineers shook up the suspension and tried to improve the noise and vibration isolation. Something they did great, and something – not very.

The motor range of the new Santa Fe is familiar to Sorento Prime, but with one exception – the Santa Fe will not have a petrol V6. “Atmospheric” 2.4 GDI gives out 188 forces and is only suitable for unhurried movement mainly in the city. Manage the convenient, but more can not count on.

Santa Fe with a two-strong turbodiesel 2.2 (440 Nm), we can talk about decent dynamics and confident overtaking on the track. Moreover, the automatic transmission in the diesel version is not six, but eight-speed. He is fine tuned, and you only notice thoughtfulness in gas responses when you are driving very fast and not at all in a crossover manner.

The chassis can support the active driver with clear passenger behavior, reliable driving stability and, surprisingly, a very vigorous “holder” in the corners, but I would like to fine tune the electric power steering. The steering wheel is heavy and static, and at high speed, which is why considerable effort is required to rebuild from row to row.

Silence conquers most in motion. On the test machines – double glazing at the front, and it goes right on-premium quietly. Neither the neighbors are heard downstream, nor the motor, and the hum from the tires is not even at a speed of well for 140 km / h.

And so, you and your family are driving in one of the quietest and most stylish crossovers in the class, bask in the pleasant interior, and if necessary you can even get off on a light off-road – even if the ground clearance measured by me is 17 cm and too small, then Santa Fe is a hardy , and the axle coupling can be forcibly blocked. But why is everyone shaking so much in the cabin?

Because the noble image of Santa Fe destroys unimportant smoothness. At speeds of up to about 80 km / h, the car is generally perceived to shake discomfort: the suspension collects all the trifles, shudders in relief and kicks on sharp bumps. Well at least the principle “more move – less holes” works, but harmony still does not come out.

Yes, we went on 19-inch wheels, but all the sensations suggest that a more modest size problem does not fix it. It’s a shame, because the platform Sorento Prime has a suspension that is almost perfectly tuned, which means that engineers from Hyundai have clearly not worked out.

For some, this is a reason to refuse to buy, but I think there will be a few of these, because the prices of the new Santa Fe are quite competitive against the background of the same Sorento Prime and Kodiaq.
