Last month, Audi introduced its flagship crossover Q8 first generation. The crossover is already on tests with journalists who conducted its first test drives.
First of all, it should be noted that, although Q8 thanks to frameless doors and octagonal grille and looks very impressive, but it’s not the most beautiful car of the brand. Subjectively, foreign colleagues prefer Q2.
Despite the fact that Q8 does not copy the athletic design of the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Range Rover Sport SVR, it is still a luxurious, comfortable and comfortable top-level crossover. In the lounge, seats are even enough for tall passengers, both front and rear. But the sensations of a large amount of space inside spoil because of the low roof and small windows. The luggage compartment at the crossover is big.
In the Q8, unlike the current Q7, the most modern version of the multimedia system MMI Touch is installed, which can be found on the “fresh” models A8, A7 and A6. Despite the fact that a multimedia system divided into two screens may not like everyone, everything is fine tuned, and there are no problems with its operation. To the materials of the cabin there are no complaints: everything is done at the highest level and in accordance with Audi standards.
In Comfort mode, the new Q8 behaves in the spirit of the younger brother Q7: it is neat, smooth, and its undercarriage perfectly isolates the roughness of the road surface from the interior, but large irregularities, of course, in the cabin are felt.
The turbocharged V6 for three liters and 282 horsepower will please its quiet work, and in general this crossover is perfect for driving at cruising speed.
In the Dynamic mode, the steering wheel becomes heavy, the suspension becomes clamped, but not to the point of tire fatigue. In turns, the crossover changes direction confidently, and although it is not driven as gently as the Cayenne, the clutch level in the turns is high, the chassis behaves predictably and stably.
The new Q8 is a bit like the Audi Quattro Coupe of the 80s of the last century, and overall, the crossover looks muscular and attractive, but the gray contours of the radiator grille, which will be available in the S-Line modification, look approximately the same as the unpainted bumpers on the most cheap cars.
The cabin of the crossover is made in the spirit of the sci-fi past, and fortunately, all this works well, including a split in two multimedia system that has a vivid tactile “feedback”.
The Audi Q8 multimedia system requires a good connection to the Internet, but there is no Internet in the Atacama Desert (Chile) where the crossover test passed, and most of the functions of the multimedia crossover system did not work. As for the saloon in general, it seemed more pleasant than the competitors in the face of BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Land Rover.
Usually a three-liter turbo engine does quite well to pull a crossover weighing more than two tons, but the observers tested it in the mountains at a height of 1,500 feet (4,572 meters in equivalent), and this height was given to the engine. Another thing is that 335 horsepower is small, so that the Q8 somehow stood out in terms of dynamics compared to Q7. However, SQ8 with a motor from Lamborghini Urus is already being tested at the Nurburgring.
In general, unlike its competitors, Audi Q8 does not sacrifice practicality for the benefit of style, and will be a good choice for most buyers who do not want compromises.
However, it’s hard to believe that Audi took 10 years to compete in this class of cars.
